Russian President Vladimir Putin has explained why Russia is taking a neutral stance when Tehran is seeking direct assistance from its allies after the recent US airstrikes that destroyed three Iranian nuclear facilities.
Despite long-standing diplomatic and economic ties between Russia and Iran, Putin said Moscow is taking a neutral stance amid the ongoing tensions. He cited the large Russian-speaking population living in Israel as one of the reasons for this.
Hindustan Times reported this in a report published on Monday (June 23) citing Russian state news agency TASS.
Putin called those who question Russia's commitment to its allies "provocateurs," TASS reported.
Speaking at a session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin said, "I would like to draw your attention to the fact that about two million people from the former Soviet Union and the Russian Federation currently live in Israel." It has now become almost a Russian-speaking state. Naturally, in Russia's contemporary history, we always take this into account.
The Russian president also said that about 15 percent of the Russian population follows Islam and Moscow is an observer member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
It is worth noting that on June 13, Israel attacked an Iranian military facility. Iran began to respond to the attack. Then, on Saturday night (June 21), the United States dropped 14,000 kg bunker-buster bombs on Iran's Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear facilities in a military operation called 'Operation Midnight Hammer'.
After the attack, US President Donald Trump said that it was an extraordinary military success. Iran's main nuclear facilities have been completely destroyed.
In response, Iran fired several missiles at Israel. The country's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Iran would first retaliate, then return to the path of negotiations. He also said that Iran was at the negotiating table. The United States and Israel have dismissed it.
