At least two women sustained injuries after an explosion and subsequent fire resulted in the collapse of three buildings in Philadelphia early Sunday morning, as reported by the city's fire department.
The Philadelphia Fire Department indicated that they arrived at the location at 1900 West Bristol Street around 4:50 a.m. following an explosion report. They discovered that three row houses had "caved in on themselves," causing a fire, according to Daniel McCarty, the acting executive chief of the fire department.
“Initial reports indicated that there were individuals trapped,” McCarty stated. “We were successful in locating two residents and transporting them to local hospitals, both of whom are elderly females; one is in critical condition while the other is stable.”
There have been reports of “secondary collapses” in proximity to the residence believed to be the origin of the “primary explosion,” McCarty noted, and at least five row homes have now been impacted. The site remains an active fire scene.
Currently, the cause of the explosion remains undetermined. Fire marshals are present at the location, and a collapse zone has been established to prepare for any further collapses, McCarty mentioned. Ten individuals were evacuated from the vicinity.
A crew from the fire department is also searching through the debris to locate any additional individuals who may have been inside the homes, he stated.
McCarty described the situation as “chaotic” and emphasized that the main priority is to ensure that other homes do not suffer from the incident.
“The most important aspect is the stability of the surrounding residences, making certain that this risk doesn’t escalate,” McCarty noted. “Our firefighters will work with their specialized operations unit to make sure that everyone is accounted for on this block. Therefore, this will be a comprehensive operation throughout the day for the Philadelphia Fire Department.”
