Zohran Mamdani has surfaced as a promising candidate in the race for the Democratic nomination for New York City mayor.
The emerging state assemblymember is leading a group of progressives aiming to prevent former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo from claiming the prestigious position at Gracie Mansion.
Once thought to be an unlikely contender, Mamdani surpassed Cuomo on Polymarket – a cryptocurrency-based prediction market based in the city – for the first time on June 23 during the race. The prediction market fluctuated between favoring Cuomo and Mamdani throughout the day.
The final voting day for the race is June 24, although early voting has seen a significant turnout – a development that The Gothamist highlighted as encouraging for Mamdani.
The Board of Elections in New York City has reported an unofficial count of 384,338 early votes in 2025, whereas AMNY noted that in 2021, the board stated that 191,197 individuals cast their votes early.
Here is some information regarding Zohran Mamdani.
